Receive the Holy Fire...

Prayer for Pentecost , by: Education for Justice

adapted from a prayer by Janet Chrisholm

Beloved God, we give you thanks for your guidance and inspiration and the promise of Hope in our time.

You call us to love in a time of indifference, to nonviolence in a time of injustice, and to life in a time of death. You teach us not only how to live, but how to die; how to transform not only the world but our own broken hearts, as well. Your Incarnation transcends all our dreams for a better world and declares your reign here and now, at this very moment in human history.

Spirit of God , by: Education for Justice

Spirit of God,
you are the breath of creation,
the wind of change
that blows through our lives,
opening us up to new dreams and new hopes,
new life in Jesus Christ.

Forgive us our closed minds
which barricade themselves
against new ideas,
preferring the past
to what you might want to do through us tomorrow.

Forgive our closed eyes
which fail to see the needs of your world,
blind to opportunities of service and love.

Forgive our closed hands

Come Holy Spirit and Show Us What Is True , by: Education for Justice

In a world of great wealth
where many go hungry
and fortunes are won and lost
by trading in money,
come, Holy Spirit, and show us what is true.

In a world of great knowledge
where many die in ignorance
and every piece of information
has a price in the market-place,
come, Holy Spirit, and show us what is true.

In a world of easy communication,
where words leap between continents
and we expect to see a picture
to illustrate each item of the news,

Breath Of God, Breathe on Us , by: Education for Justice

O God, the source of our common life,
when we are dry and scattered,
when we are divided and alone,
we long for connection, we long for community.
Breath of God, breathe on us.

With those we live beside,
who are often strange to us,
whom we may be afraid to approach,
yet who have riches of friendship to share,
we long for connection, we long for community.
Breath of God, breathe on us.

With those we have only heard of,
who see with different eyes,

Listen to the Movement of the Spirit , by: Education for Justice

In the depth of silence
listen to the movement of the Spirit.

In the depth of silence
listen to the beating of your heart,
listen to the gurgling of the stream,
listen to the blowing of the wind.

In the depth of silence,
listen to the cry of the voiceless,
listen to the groaning of the hungry,
listen to the sigh of the oppressed.

In the depth of silence
listen to the peace of justice,
listen to the joy of celebration,
listen to the hope of a new world.

Prayer to the Holy Spirit , by: Education For Justice

Wind of God, continue to blow.
Sail over the barriers that we build
to divide ourselves from each other.
Pick up your seeds of freedom and truth
wherever they flourish,
carry them across frontiers
to be planted in other soil,
to begin fresh growth and new forms.

Blow from the South
to the ears of Northern peoples.
Blow away the blinders
which keep our eyes focused only on the past,
repeating its violence,
deepening its divisions,
and adding to its despair.
