Prayer of Remembrance

By: Cardinal McCarrick

O God, our Lord, we recall today in faith and in sorrow the terrible events of September 11. We mourn again those loved ones whose lives were ended on that tragic day and the families that were torn apart by the terror of that disaster. In some ways, it is with us still, O Lord, and our hearts break anew as we remember.

And yet, we know that You were with us then to give us strength, to forge our unity, to carry us forward. We believe in Your Presence in our lives, especially in these days of war and continuing anxiety. Keep us together, never let us stumble into vengeance or to lash out against the innocent or in response that is beyond the righteous way.

Give courage and right judgment to our president and all our nation's leaders. Help them and all of us to trust in You as our mothers and fathers did, so like them we may build this land in peace and justice without fear or hatred and so be faithful to Your law of love. Amen.
